In Agroecology of Cascadia, we considered agricultural systems through an ecological lens and worked toward answering the question, "how can a productive farm mimic natural forest systems?" Through our learning about ecosystem management and natural resource use, we developed a design for our "ideal" farm, which we mapped out at the end of the quarter, as seen above. On my group's farm, we included a one-acre food forest, through which chickens would roam freely, as well as an acre of row-cropped potatoes and tulips. We also included an AirBnb, for added income, and a cricket rearing project, in an aim to experiment with alternative sources of protein. Through the design project, I was able to understand the many considerations necessary to develop a financially, ecologically, and socially viable farm.
