Food Production Systems for Sustainability focused on the many different components of the food system that we must consider in order to change the way we grow and eat food. At the end of the quarter, we each selected a topic to investigate on two different scales and consider the overall sustainability of that system. For a long time, I have been interested in the ways in which migrant labor is utilized in our current food system, and whether there is a way to make that labor source a just occupation and positive contribution to the lives of both the workers and the farmers. The current use of migrant labor is unethical and harmful, but it does not have to be that way, and this class gave me the space to consider how we can reorient it to favor laborers instead of profit. I think this video is an incredible culmination of the work I did over the course of this class, and it articulates exactly the sorts of changes which I believe are vital in order to continue feeding ourselves.
